Happy Saturday, Friends! Hope you all have had a wonderful week!
You may remember that I’m a part of a monthly DIY challenge called At Home DIY. It’s been so fun to challenge myself each month and see all the inspiring projects my blogger friends come up with! You can check them all out here! This month’s challenge is to complete a DIY project in 2 hours or less. Who doesn’t love a quick and easy DIY?!
Ok, now here’s the part where I’m gonna throw myself under the bus and show you how NOT together I have it. Ready?? I started a quick project…back in 2017. It was fast. It was easy. And I totally dropped the ball and never finished it. Facepalm. Anyone else do this?! Anyway, it was time to finish the project so I could finally share it with you all!
If you’re a long time reader, you may remember that we conquered the shoe mess in our breakfast nook and showed you the coat hooks where we keep our coats and jackets. Well, fast forward to both kids being in school and constantly coming home with backpacks, lunchboxes, and jackets. We enter our house through the door in our breakfast nook and the breakfast room was constantly a mess! The hooks above the shoe cabinet are hung about 6′ (they were here when we bought the house) and obviously too tall for the kids to reach. We desperately needed a place for the kids to put their stuff as the came in from school.
We decided to install a second set of coat hooks under the kitchen bar within reach of the kids so that they could independently put their things away as they entered the house. It has been such a game changer! I especially appreciate that the hooks are hidden from view from everywhere else in the house except the breakfast nook to keep the clutter to a minimum.
Let me show you how we made it–it’s incredibly easy!
First, we installed a wood backing for the hooks to attach to and keep them from yanking out of the wall. We cut down a 1×4 pre-primed piece of wood to the length of the wall, accounting for the corbels holding up the bar. (Don’t forget, home improvement stores will cut your wood for you for free!) Because these hooks needed to hold heavy backpacks, we made sure to secure the wood to the studs in the wall with screws and then went back through with the nail gun to finish attaching it.
Next, we measured out where to hang the hooks and attached them to the board.
Fast forward a year and a half… I finally filled the holes with spackle and sanded the spackle smooth. I recently heard about this 4 in 1 spackle tube on Young House Love has a Podcast and have been loving it! So quick and easy!
Finally, I gave the wood a coat of paint and caulked the seams. Done!
Ah, so functional!
See how nice and tucked away the clutter is? So happy!
What quick projects have you guys been up to lately? Have a great rest of the weekend, Friends!

Wow, what a brilliant idea, I be the kiddos love having hooks at their level. Great for you mom to hang your purse in a spot where you can always find it!

What a clever way to utilize space! I bet your family really enjoys this area, as well.
Thanks for the inspiration.
